There are some distilleries you can simply turn up and visit. Aberargie isn't one of them.
Set amongst its own barley fields in Perthshire, this independent, family-owned distillery isn't normally open to the public. But on Thursday 8th October, we're taking just 10 whisky lovers behind the gates as part of our latest Sip Seekers Unlocked experience. And the timing makes this visit particularly interesting.
So, what makes Aberargie so special?
Located just south of Perth on the Morrison family's 300-acre farm, Aberargie has been built around a genuine barley-to-bottle philosophy.
The barley used to make its whisky is grown in the fields surrounding the distillery, before being distilled, matured and bottled on site.
It's an approach that gives the team an unusual level of control over the journey from field to bottle- and on our Insider Tour, you'll get to see that journey firsthand.
But perhaps the most intriguing thing for whisky fans?
Aberargie isn't normally open to the public.
There’s no standard visitor centre experience or daily programme of tours. Getting behind the gates, seeing the production areas and stepping inside the maturation warehouse is a rare opportunity.
A few things you might not know about Aberargie…
🥃 They've been waiting a long time to share their whisky
Aberargie started distilling in 2017, but rather than rushing to release a young whisky as soon as it legally became Scotch, the team waited. Its inaugural single malt finally arrived in 2026, after years of maturation and patience.
🌾 The whisky starts just outside the distillery
Aberargie grows its barley on the surrounding family farm. Two varieties play a particularly important role here: Golden Promise and Laureate.
Golden Promise is a heritage barley once widely used by Scotch producers and prized for the rich, oily character it can bring to spirit. Laureate is a more modern variety, producing a cleaner, vibrant and fruit-forward style.
👨👩👧👦 There are five generations of whisky history behind it
The Morrison family has been involved in Scotch whisky for five generations, across everything from blending and bottling to distilling. Aberargie marked the family's return to distilling on its own land after more than two decades.
🌱 They're farmers as well as whisky makers
That connection to the land goes beyond growing barley. The team has also been exploring regenerative farming practices on the estate, with a focus on areas such as soil health and biodiversity.
It all makes Aberargie a fascinating place to see up close- which isn't usually an option.
And then there’s the whisky…
This is where the timing of our visit gets particularly exciting.
On 15th September 2026, Aberargie launches the first two whiskies in its new Expressions range.
And there's a brilliant idea behind them.
Instead of combining Golden Promise and Laureate barley as they did for the inaugural release, the Expressions range separates them, allowing whisky drinkers to explore the individual influence each barley variety can have on the final spirit.
The Golden Promise Expression has been matured predominantly in first-fill bourbon casks and is described with notes of buttery pastry, baked orchard fruits, brown sugar and gentle baking spices.
The Laureate Expression turns the cask balance around, using predominantly first-fill sherry casks and bringing notes of candied orange peel, dried and ripe orchard fruits and a lingering honeyed finish.
Our Unlocked experience takes place just a few weeks after they launch.
That means our 10 guests will have the opportunity to taste the new expressions at the place they were actually made, alongside Aberargie's new make spirit and an exclusive warehouse tasting.
You'll also have the opportunity to purchase the new releases during your visit.
Meet the man making the whisky
Rather than a conventional visitor tour, the experience will be hosted by Aberargie's Head of Production, Graeme.
Across two hours, you'll follow the whisky's journey from estate-grown barley through production and into maturation, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get a much deeper look at what's happening behind the scenes.
And when you're tasting the whisky, you'll be able to hear about the decisions behind it directly from the people involved in making it.
Afterwards, you'll sit down to a locally prepared lunch, with time to chat to the team.
